What is TEAM Tuskers and how did we come to be?
The Whole Child Community Coalition (WCCC) is a community based think tank comprised of a broad representation of community members committed to supporting the youth of Somers by strengthening relationships to improve student learning, promote strong families and support healthy choices.  The first major action was to develop a mentoring program to support the youth of Somers.

We have created a one-on-one mentoring program at the Somers Middle School starting early in 2013. We will be looking for mentors who will meet with a 6th grader once a week, in school, during the school year.

We are currently in the process of blueprinting the program with the principal of the middle school and the superintendent of schools. We are in the process of interviewing and screening potential mentors. Training and matching will be on-going and our orientation will be at the end of February.

But we are also looking for residents who would like to work on the program with us – for example we need PR/marketers, fund raisers, and trainers.

Our program will launch in the spring of 2013 with expansion throughout the year.

Mission

Our Mission is to increase resiliency factors for students by providing relationships with a caring adult to improve students' social and emotional well-being.

Vision
We desire to provide safe and nurturing relationships where students can gain from the wisdom of mentors to be better prepared to face the challenges of today's world.

Our Name and Logo - Elephants
Elephants are the symbol of wisdom in the Asian Culture, and they are renowned for their great memory and intelligence. Like humans, elephants are capable of forming very special bonds with friends and family members. These relationships start at the core of the herd (i.e. mother and calf), but they radiate out, and there have been astounding reports of lifelong bonds between elephants that have transcended time and distance.

Elephants value their family structure, perhaps more so than many other animals.  They are naturally outgoing, sociable animals, and as such enjoy the interaction with fellow family and herd members.  Although structured, the herd is fluid enough to compensate for unforeseen circumstances (such as the death of one of the mothers.)

The cohesive structure of the family serves as a defense against predators as well as providing a social environment in which young elephants can mature and learn.  Young elephants learn normal behavior in a social context, and learning from others, or social learning, plays a crucial role in their development.
